What's New in Baseline-D for Summer Sea Ice

See the product downloads page for access details.

The following evolutions have been applied in Baseline-D (released May 2025) as compared to Baseline-C (released April 2024). Further details are provided in the Cryo-TEMPO Product Handbook and ATBD documents.

Evolutions in Baseline-D version 001

Improved CNN for lead / floe classification

Using more training data and a more advanced architecture

Validation and Verification

Addition of new independent datasets for validation and verification.

Evolutions in Baseline-C version 001

A new product in this baseline.

To complement the original CryoTEMPO Sea Ice product, which provides estimates of Arctic sea ice freeboard from October to April (including), the novel CryoTEMPO Summer Sea Ice product yields estimates of radar freeboard from May to September (including) in the Arctic.

As melt ponds complicate the retrieval in summer, a slightly different approach is needed in the calculation, making it two different products. The main processing difference is that for summer sea ice, freeboard is calculated at each lead location rather than at each floe location. Hence, here we fit a polynomial to the surrounding floe heights rather than interpolating sea level. Furthermore, leads and floes are distinguished using a convolutional neural network trained specifically on summer data and a 50 % TFMRA retracker is used. Otherwise, consistency between the products is aspired and implemented where possible.

The lack of an operational snow on sea ice product in summer currently hinders the production of sea ice freeboard and thickness. So, for now the Summer Sea Ice product is limited to radar freeboard, smoothed radar freeboard and radar freeboard uncertainty along each CryoSat-2 orbit.

Evolutions in Baseline-B version 001

No Summer Seaice products available in Baseline-B.
