In Memoriam

In 2013, in two separate tragic accidents, we lost Seymour and Katherine. They are greatly missed. Their scientific legacy of pioneering sea ice research lives on.

.
Person

Seymour Laxon

Professor of Polar Observation, Director of CPOM. His research pioneered the use of satellite altimetry to measure sea ice thickness and surface circulation in the Arctic Ocean. His work provided evidence that led to the development of the European Space Agency’s CryoSat mission, a satellite monitoring polar ice.

Person

Katharine Giles

Lecturer, CPOM, UCL. Katharine, a passionate science communicator, carried out ground-breaking research into sea ice, ocean circulation and wind patterns.
