Former Staff/Students
Many of the world's leading polar scientists started their careers as students or staff of CPOM within UCL's Polar Science Group, and still have close links with our group. Here are a few (of many):
.
Sinéad Farrell
Associate Professor, University of Maryland. Principal investigator on the NASA ICESat-2 Science Team.

Danny Feltham
Professor of Climate Physics, University of Reading, CPOM

Sophie Nowicki
Professor, University of Buffalo. Previously, Deputy Chief for the Cryospheric Sciences Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

Andrew Shepherd
Director of CPOM (2013..) Professor of Earth Observation, University of Leeds. Principal Scientific Advisor to the European Space Agency CryoSat satellite mission, co-leader of the ESA-NASA Ice Sheet Mass Balance Inter-comparison Exercise.

Alek Petty
Associate Research Scientist at NASA's Cryospheric Sciences Lab and the University of Maryland

Rachel Tilling
Assistant Research Scientist NASA Goddard Space Flight Center/University of Maryland

Isobel Lawrence
Research Fellow, CPOM, University of Leeds. Sea Ice Expert.

Will Gregory
Postdoc, NOAA Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), Princeton, USA.
In Memoriam
In 2013, in two separate tragic accidents, we lost Seymour and Katherine. They are greatly missed. Their scientific legacy of pioneering sea ice research lives on.
.
Seymour Laxon
Professor of Polar Observation, Director of CPOM. His research pioneered the use of satellite altimetry to measure sea ice thickness and surface circulation in the Arctic Ocean. His work provided evidence that led to the development of the European Space Agency’s CryoSat mission, a satellite monitoring polar ice.

Katharine Giles
Lecturer, CPOM, UCL. Katharine, a passionate science communicator, carried out ground-breaking research into sea ice, ocean circulation and wind patterns.
